25. Princess
The final painting in this collection is me, as a little girl.
I wore a pink dress, complete with snap-on dangly pearl earrings, a long fake-pearl necklace, a purple Barbie purse, and ballet slippers. I was known to wear that dress over jeans, because why should you need a special occasion to wear something wonderful?
I adored sparkly things. I would stop to admire anything pink, glittery, or shimmery, and my mum (who was never much of a girly girl) had to learn to appreciate them right alongside me.
I used to make dresses out of tissue paper, cutting them out and hanging them on the walls of my parents' house. I'd sketch elaborate haute couture designs in my notebooks, too. I thought I might grow up to be a fashion designer.
I didn't become a fashion designer, but I did grow up to make art for a living.
Looking at this little girl now, I think she'd be pretty proud of us. And maybe she'd be pleased to know that I never really stopped looking for the sparkle in things.
After all, Amira means princess. đź‘‘
