01. Red Door of Rome
Rome, Italy
I’ve actually attempted to paint this scene twice before: once in oils and once in watercolors. Somehow, I kept coming back to it.
I remember walking through Rome when I noticed this door. The red was so vibrant in the sunlight, while everything around it seemed to sit in shadow. I had to stop and take it in.
There's something about the way light can transform even the simplest detail that I find endlessly fascinating. A door is just a door, until the light hits it in exactly the right way.
This was the first painting I made for 25 Before 25, and in a way, it feels fitting that the collection began with something I'd been trying to capture for so long.
